Will Epoxy Peel or Chip?
It's the question almost every homeowner asks us before booking: "Will this peel up in a couple of years like paint does?"
Short answer: a properly installed epoxy floor doesn't peel. When peeling does happen, it almost always comes down to the prep — or the lack of it.
Paint sits on top of concrete. A real epoxy coating bonds into it. That bond is everything, which is why at Lo and Behold Floor Epoxy Coating we put the time into doing the prep right — grinding the surface open, cleaning it thoroughly, and fixing what's needed before a drop of epoxy goes down. Prep is the unglamorous part of the job, and it's exactly where floors succeed or fail.
We also use 100% epoxy with nothing mixed in or thinned out. Cut-rate coatings and thinned-down mixes can look fine on day one, then lift the moment they meet real garage life — hot tires in July, salty slush in January. A proper coating handles all of that, season after season.
What about chipping? Epoxy is hard, and hard surfaces can chip — drop a sharp tool edge straight onto it and you might take a small bite out of the coating. The good news: small chips are cosmetic, they don't spread or start a peeling chain reaction, and they can be touched up.
So here's the straight version: epoxy peels when the prep was rushed or the product was cut corners. It doesn't peel when the crew takes its time and uses the real stuff. That's the whole secret, and it's how we do every single floor.
