How to Handle Spills: Oil, Paint, and Chemicals on Epoxy
Spills are part of garage life in Calgary. A dripping car, a tipped paint can, a splash of antifreeze while you're topping things up before winter — it happens to all of us. The good news is that one of the best things about an epoxy floor is how forgiving it is when something spills. Because the surface is sealed and seamless, most messes sit on top instead of soaking in the way they would on bare concrete.
For oil, speed helps, but panic doesn't. Blot up as much as you can with paper towels or rags first — don't spread it around with a mop right away. Then wash the spot with warm water and a little mild dish soap, rinse, and let it dry. For a stubborn mark, a second gentle wash usually does it.
Paint needs a slightly different touch. If it's still wet latex paint, wipe it up quickly with a damp cloth. If it has dried, soften it with warm soapy water and lift it gently with a plastic scraper — never a metal blade, which can scratch the coating. Oil-based paint is tougher, so take your time and work in a small area first.
For household chemicals, antifreeze, and cleaners, the same rule applies: wipe them up promptly, wash with mild soap and water, and rinse well. Don't let puddles sit for days, and skip abrasive scouring pads and harsh chemical strippers — they can dull the finish over time.
A few habits make all of this easier. Keep a roll of paper towels and a bottle of mild soap in the garage, clean up drips when you notice them rather than leaving them for the weekend, and give the floor a quick mop now and then so small spills don't build up into stains.
