Baseboards and Epoxy: Why That 4-Inch Detail Matters
When most people picture a new epoxy floor, they picture the floor itself — the colour, the flakes, the shine. But one small detail makes a finished floor look truly finished: what happens where the floor meets the wall.
That detail is often a 4-inch epoxy upturn, sometimes called a cove base. Instead of stopping the coating right at the floor line, the epoxy is carried a few inches up the wall. It creates a smooth, sealed edge with no gap for dirt and water to hide in.
In a Calgary garage, that edge earns its keep. Meltwater, slush, and road salt tend to pool along the walls, especially in winter. A sealed upturn helps keep that moisture on the surface, where it can be wiped or mopped away, instead of working into the joint between the floor and the wall. It also protects the bottom of the wall from everyday bumps, boots, and cleaning water.
It helps with cleaning, too. Without a lip or a gap at the edge, there is nowhere for dust, grit, and dried salt to collect. A quick sweep and mop reach right to the wall, and the line stays neat.
The look matters as well. A clean upturn frames the floor and makes a garage, basement, or workroom feel complete, rather than leaving a raw edge. It can match the floor colour for a quiet, tidy finish, or carry the same flakes up the wall for a bolder, more finished look. Talk through the height and finish before work starts, so the edge looks the way you pictured it.
If your space already has baseboards, ask what happens to them during the job. In some rooms they come off so the epoxy can run cleanly underneath the line; in others, the upturn itself becomes the finished edge. Either way, a clear plan before installation day avoids surprises.
Small details are what separate a coating that simply covers concrete from a floor that looks done right. At Lo and Behold Floor Epoxy Coating, we take the time to finish those edges properly, because that is the part you will notice every time you walk in.
